Florida is known for its temperate climate, calm weather, and constant sunshine. The Sunshine State is the perfect place to plant flowers, trees, and shrubs, providing plants with the nutrients and sunlight they need to survive.

For this reason, many people use landscaping design to give their Florida yard the curb appeal it needs to stand out. Since winters are mild and summers bring plenty of rain, plants in Florida flourish, allowing homeowners to take full advantage of their yard.

In Florida, many different kinds of plants grow, allowing homeowners to plant as many seedlings as they wish. Since so many different types of plants prosper in the Sunshine State, it can be hard to figure out how, where, and what to plant.

To make the planting process simpler for homeowners, we’ve created a quick guide on planting in Florida. Our guide can help give homeowners landscaping ideas that best meet their needs. With our tips and services, any Florida yard can get the curb appeal it needs to stand out.

Planting Flowers in Florida

Flower planting in Florida is easy, as there are many opportunities for ample growth throughout the year. Florida’s winters are mild, with warm, rainy summers. These seasons are perfect for providing beautiful blooms, allowing homeowners to have vibrant colors in their yards.

There are three major types of flowers that a homeowner can plant. The type of flower a person chooses largely depends on when the homeowner grows them. Knowing when to plant is an important step, as it can dictate what types of flowers populate a homeowner’s yard.

There are three major types of flowers:

Annuals

These types of flowers grow, germinate, and die all in one season. However, the plants do drop seeds every year, which could mean that new flowers grow in their place in the next year.

Unfortunately, most annuals need yearly replanting, but other than that, homeowners need to do little to no maintenance. These flowers offer results quickly, blooming and blossoming in a relatively short period.

Most annuals do well in tropical or semi-tropical climates, as there are only a select few that thrive in the winter. Marigolds and petunias are common Florida annuals, as they thrive in warm, humid weather.

Perennials

Perennials are much different from annuals, as they can prosper for both winter and spring. They can grow during the winter season and bloom in the spring. Sometimes, homeowners can get long-blooming perennials, as well. These types of flowers show off their beautiful colors for much longer than average. Popular kinds of perennials include the Golden-rayed lily and Easter lily.

These flowers can sometimes last anywhere from 2 – 5 years, which gives them a significant edge over annuals. However, these flowers are not as low-maintenance as annuals and may require a great deal of landscaping. Thankfully, a landscaping service can make caring for these beautiful flowers easy.

Biennials

Biennials are very easy to mix up with perennials. There is one significant distinction between these types of flowers and their perennial counterparts- when growth occurs. Biennials don’t bloom at all during their first year, which usually confuses homeowners.

If a homeowner notices that their flowers aren’t blooming, it might just mean that they are biennials. In their second year of growth, these flowers typically bloom.

Foxglove and hollyhock are common biennial flowers. These flowers are beautiful and hardy, usually growing best if planted in early fall or spring.

Planting Trees in Florida

Florida is home to plant biodiversity, making it an excellent place to plant trees. Trees prosper in Florida’s semi-tropical, humid climate, making them a beautiful accent to any yard or garden.

Tree planting can be very time-consuming and stressful, especially if a homeowner attempts to do the process independently. Thankfully, Anthony’s Lawn and Landscape can help with all of your tree planting needs.

Our landscaping experts recommend the following tips for proper tree growth:

  • Plant the tree in a place with an open view of the sky
  • Dig away from any pipes or electrical wires
  • Make sure the hole is wide enough for the root system
  • Be sure to water the sapling thoroughly
  • Stake the tree to hold it firmly in the ground
  • Plant a tree in a well-lit area
  • Make sure a tree is not being dehydrated by sunlight or stunted by shade.

These steps can help any tree grow big and strong, providing it with the nutrients and room it needs to grow correctly. A homeowner ensures proper tree growth by planting a  tree in an open, well-lit, and moist area.

Planting Shrubs in Florida

Shrubs are an excellent way to accentuate any yard. While they are not as bright as most flowers, shrubs are relatively low-maintenance, only requiring watering, pruning, and trimming.

In Florida, homeowners can plant shrubs whenever they want. Any season in Florida is mild enough for proper shrub growth, possibly due to Florida’s temperate climate.

Shrubs are easy to plant, making them a must-have for many Florida yards. Shrubs that are properly pruned and trimmed can also help give a yard curb appeal, providing a yard with the balance it needs to flourish.
