Landscape Design Services

We offer a variety of professional landscape design services here at Anthony’s Lawn and Landscape. With all of these great services, we can design and install your complete landscaping dream. This includes designing and installing retaining walls, hardscaping elements, and water features. Our landscaping professionals will help you to select and install the perfect trees, shrubs, and flowers to fit into your Landscape Design, creating the overall look you desire.

Here are some considerations we factor into how we design your landscape:

  • Understanding the difference between Eastern and Western traditions
    •  Do you want the architecture of your garden to be based on western traditions — with straight lines, rectangles, and symmetry — or on the Eastern practice of irregular forms, curves, and materials such as mud, rocks, and gravel to symbolize the natural world? Once you understand the principles, you will have the confidence to bend the rules and to mix the elements of both. Being able to determine the perfect balance of elements is crucial to creating a garden that will have everybody talking.
  • Knowing the garden’s purpose
    • Historically, all the gardens were planned with one of three goals in mind, according to the famous landscape architect Eckbo: to collect food, to establish living space, or to be visually appealing. Ask yourself: what is the goal you want your garden to achieve? Would you like to plant food for your family? How about creating a space you can live in? Perhaps even create a space you just like to look at? With the answer in mind, you can design a double-duty space, mixing ornamentals and edibles in a single planting bed, for example.
  • Defining your garden’s boundaries
    • When you define the boundaries of space, you give the eye something to focus on—a hedge or a fence in the distance. Clarifying where the perimeters have created a sense of order. You also do not want to accidentally begin building on your neighbor’s landscape or backyard; that would be embarrassing!
  • Paying heed to the unique characteristics of your garden
    • Each piece of land has its own distinct features: sunny areas, shade, elevation changes, windy spots, existing trees, mature shrubs, and soil conditions that may not match your neighbor’s. It is important to keep track of these features and use them to your own advantage when planning your garden or landscape.
  • Get to know the microclimate and topography of your land
    • Test your soil to see if it’s acidic and study its composition: is it sandy and loose or heavy and clay? You can use the composition you find to your advantage, as different building materials can react positively to different topographies.
  • Choosing foundation plants that anchor the house
    • Tie the house (and other buildings, such as a self-contained garage or a garden shed) to the land by planting a shrub at the base of the foundation. You can also train the vines to grow on the walls. The house and the garden would benefit if it is obvious that they belong to each other.
  • Creating the right dimensions for a pathway or walkway
    • You can layout a path that is as narrow as 18 inches in a tight pace. But the wider the path, the larger the garden will feel. A 48-inch wide path (if you have space) would allow two persons to walk side by side. You can also experiment: lay out a path that narrows and widens or add a curve to create visual interest. It is recommended that you measure out your garden and mark potential points of interest before the consultation.
  • Choosing the right plants for your personal ecosphere
    • What plants are going to be the happiest in your garden? Native plants are a good alternative. Also, the plants you see are happy in the gardens of your neighbors. Remember that your own garden has microclimates of sun and shade and that the plants are planted accordingly depending on these microclimates.
  • Planting with the future in mind
    • When planting a tree, consider the scale and form of the tree to be mature. The saddest thing in the garden is a tree with branches cutaway because it grew too high for its position. Give a tree plenty of room to grow as tall and large as it likes, and you (and future generations) will end up with a magnificent specimen.

Here at Anthony’s Lawn and Landscape, we understand that every landscape and backyard is different. This is why we tailor our designs to fit your exact needs and wants. We want to make your landscape stand out from the rest of the neighborhood, so no request is too big or small to handle.
