What is Hardscaping?

Many people have a basic understanding of what landscaping is, but did you know that there are two parts to this process? Landscaping consists of two elements: hardscaping and softscaping. Hardscaping encompasses all of the non-living additions to a landscape, while softscaping focuses on what is living. Essentially, softscaping includes the plants in your landscape, while hardscaping is the pots you are growing them in.

Hardscaping vs. Softscaping

In all aspects of design, we find that balance is critical. A well-balanced landscape design should include both hardscaping and softscaping features. All “living” elements of your landscape, such as trees, soil, flowers, and grass, encompass the elements of softscaping. While not having to be soft to the touch, all softscaping materials are plants. In contrast, hardscaping is composed of all non-living materials. Almost any physical structure or decorative feature is hardscaping; as long as it is incapable of dying, it is a hardscaping element. In short, softscaping is living, and hardscaping is not. While vastly different, these two types of landscaping can be beneficial for one another. Hardscaping can benefit a garden, for instance, by positively affecting the grounds and keeping them undamaged, which reduces any potential erosion.

Elements of Hardscaping

Hardscape features are solid and unchanging, a concrete set patio, for example. In many cases, it can provide structure and definition in spaces that are lacking organization and depth. While some elements may be natural, like loose gravel, many are artificial and can provide various environmental effects such as water conservation. Designs and structures that are hardscaping elements include:

  • Patios
  • Decks
  • Firepits
  • Pools
  • Walkways
  • Retaining walls
  • Water features
  • Driveways
  • Outdoor kitchens
  • Bike paths

Hardscaping Materials

Just as there are several different materials in soft landscaping, such as mulch, dirt, sod, and shrubs, many different types of hard landscaping materials will help achieve an aesthetically pleasing addition to your space. Each different hardscape material provides various uses, styles, durabilities, and pricing. Hardscaping materials and their common uses include:

Brick

Walkways, driveways, and walls

Concrete

Patios, islands, and steps

Asphalt

Walkways, walls, and steps

Loose Stone

Gravel paths, garden borders, and driveways

Pavers

Walkways, garden paths, and driveways

Tile

Patios, steps, and walkways

Wood

Decks, fences, and pergolas

Benefits Of Hardscaping

There are, of course, many reasons as to why you would want hardscaping in your landscape. However, you must take what you want in your complete project seriously. Your lawn is not something you can throw anything onto. Hardscaping requires planning and attention for you to reap the benefits from their inclusion. Here are just a few of these benefits.

Low Maintenance

One of the most significant benefits of having hardscape features in your landscape design is that it can provide an opportunity for less outdoor maintenance. Once your design is complete, that’s it! Since your new elements will be non-living, there will be no need for trimming, cutting, or watering.

Increase in Property Value

Including a hardscape feature as an extension of your home can increase your property’s value. Depending on added features, not only can this landscape design add a visual appeal, but it can also add usable square footage to your outdoor space.

New Dimensions in Your Space

Hardscaping adds dimension to your space with various textures, structures, and materials that can take a plain, wide-open backyard and turn it into a private and visually appealing area for you to enjoy daily.

Water Conservation

It is especially significant to include hardscape features in any drought-prone area because hardscaping elements are non-living and require no watering. Not only will this help you save money on your water bill, but it will also provide a positive effect on the environment!

Benefits the Environment

By definition, no water or fertilizer is necessary for hardscaping. The exception, of course, is if the element is necessary to grow a piece of softscaping, such as flowers or other plants. When plotted correctly, it can have environmental benefits such as aiding infiltration and limiting runoff.
